Gordon Elliott's Firefox displayed what he was capable of when downing the colours of the unbeaten Ballyburn in the Kettles Country House Hotel Supporting Fingal Ravens GFC Raceday Maiden Hurdle at Fairyhouse.

There was little to separate them in the market with Ballyburn [10/11] just edging favouritism. However, it was the Gordon Elliott-trained Firefox who would go on to victory.

Gordon Elliott's contender made his debut over hurdles when fourth at Navan this time last year before quickly establishing himself as a smart bumper performer, winning three of his four outings in that sphere.

The two market principals dominated proceedings from flag fall, but it was Elliott's charge who assumed command with an excellent jump at the second last. The son of Walk In The Park stayed on strongly to score by a comfortable two and a half lengths under Jack Kennedy, despite a slight mistake at the last.

"He's a good horse and Jack said he's so straightforward," said Elliott.

"We thought he needed two and a half miles and that's why we were making every post a winning post.

"Jack said he could go two and a half, but he's got so much boot and is so relaxed that everything is very easy to him. He looks exciting and you'd like his attitude.

"We wanted to get today out of the way first and I just loved the way he jumped. Jack said he was so professional over the last two."

Paddy Power cut the winner to 10/1 from 20/1 for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
