Talented Irish-bred three-year-old Nova Vocal gave his Singapore Guineas hopes no harm following a commanding win in the $45,000 Class 4 Non Premier race over 1200m on Friday night.

Taking up the lead after spearing over from a wide alley, the son of Vocalised was always in full control under regular partner Craig Grylls.

The long-priced pair of Savage Storm (Mohd Zaki) and Sun Seeker (Wong Chin Chuen) did keep him on his toes a little as they came forming a line of three, but if they were hoping that might soften up the odds-on $7 favourite, they weren’t left wondering very soon.

Once Grylls gave a few click-ups, Nova Vocal went through his gears almost on cue, bounding away to the line, gapping his rivals by just under four lengths.

In the end, the pair who had dared keep up with Nova Vocal in the early stages were rewarded for their cheek. Savage Storm hung on to the runner-up spot, two lengths clear of Sun Seeker. The winning time was 1min 11.72secs for the 1200m on Polytrack.

Peters was obviously pleased he had a more than useful sort under his barn roof, but would still not get ahead of himself even if Nova Vocal was nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Singapore Guineas (1600m) next Saturday.

“We always knew he had a lot of ability. He’s a very decent horse,” said the English handler.

“It’s not easy for these three-year-olds to run in handicap company, but he’s impressed me with the way he’s done it.

“He was getting a little on his toes in the parade ring, but he wasn’t getting warm or anything. He was okay.

“It’s not easy to step up from six furlongs to 1600m on the quick back-up, but the owners are keen to have a go. You turn three only once.

“We’ll have to see how he pulls up and we’ll have a chat. If he runs, I’ve already booked Karis Teetan to ride him.”

Grylls said Nova Vocal definitely had a motor, but he was unlikely to test it in the Guineas. With Nova Vocal having always been on the fringe before Friday’s win, Grylls had committed to Super Dynasty for Lee Freedman.

“This horse has raw talent for sure. I was a bit concerned by his draw, but he jumped pretty quickly and came across well,” said the Kiwi jockey.

“He travelled really good and just kept finding strongly. Provided he settles, I think he deserves to have a go at the mile.”

With that second win, Nova Vocal has now banked in more than $85,000 in stakes earnings for the Nova Racing Stable
