For northern greyhound commentator Peter Earley on Sunday it was his 45th Plasterboard Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar race delivery – surely an Australasian record for the most consecutive calls of a Group 1 event.

In recognition of this achievement, the Auckland club instigated the running of the $6,000 Peter Earley Classic as an invitation 527m event a few years ago.

Sunday’s edition saw the Denis Schofield trained Lochinvar Brogue installed as the warm race favourite. He never gave his supporters any concern whatsoever by seizing the early race lead. It was a lead he was never going to hand up, cruising through his assignment to stop the clock in 30.47s holding a two-length margin over his rivals.

Using completely contrasting racing tactics was Westworld from the Ben Craik kennels. He made his usual slow start which saw him settling in the rear group from where he improved into a midfield position when approaching the home turn.

It had been the winner’s kennelmate Gold Class who led the chase after the pace-setting winner. She looked like she was going hold that position right through to the finish, however, Westworld flicked on the turbochargers to finish powerfully to nail her during the very final few bounds to secure the runners-up prize by a head.

It was the 14th career win for the Australian owned Lochinvar Brogue. He has also placed on another 14 occasions which now sees his stake earnings sitting at $36,967 from his 39 race day outings.
