Dyna Weslyn went into Thursday’s time honoured $16,000 Kingston Cup with a query hanging over her about running out a strong 732m in her first attempt at an extreme distance. She made an emphatic statement with her answer. She not only powerfully ran out the entire journey, but she also equalled the C2D 732m class record held by the outstanding stayer Ring The Bell when the Craig Roberts prepared stayer stopped the clock in a tidy 43.18s in this Group 2 event.

Dyna Weslyn hopped away nicely from the two trap, then after being involved in a degree of jostling going into the first turn, she seized the race lead with a lap of the Addington track to run. She was never challenged afterwards, cruising away from her rivals and powering home in a strong 13.12s final sectional to land her convincing first Group race title by an effortless 11.25 length margin.

Prefect Result was also checking out a longer journey for the first time for his conditioner Ray Adcock. He headed into this event having lowered Dyna Weslyn’s freshly set Addington 645m track record (37.67s) to 37.60s. It was a gutsy effort from this Kiwi bred (Barcia Bale – Andrea) stayer as he also overcame early traffic issues to finish strongly from out of the midfield pack to claim his second placing.

The winner’s kennelmate Avenger Bale is a proven stayer as seen by his strong Christchurch Casino NZ Stayers Cup victory over this 732m trip at Group 1 level. He raced handy to the pace, albeit a margin behind Dyna Weslyn and he was left gasping by the two “new staying kids on the block”, finishing another 3.25 lengths further behind in third.

There was a dead heat for the fourth placing another two lengths back with the Dave and Jean Fahey prepared proven stayer Translator storming home join Dave’s Dot from the John McInerney kennels for that placing.

“I’m really rapt with her effort – really impressed with the strong way she ran it out (732m). I thought her 13.12s run home was sensational, especially considering she was first up over that trip.

“It was a tidy all round race by her and I was pleased with the way she knuckled down to her task after getting bumped early on. Once Weslyn got the lead a lap out she just kept on driving all the way to the finish. Taking that early knock certainly didn’t faze her as seen by her equalling Ring The Bell’s class record,” advised Roberts, who added that Avenger Bale has come through his assignment really good and he is on target for his Auckland Sunday Waterloo Cup heat engagement.

Roberts isn’t wasting anytime in now casting his eyes further afield – Australia, for the future staying assignments for Dyna Weslyn. He told us on Friday morning, while driving his remaining Waterloo Cup contenders north for their Hatrick and Manukau heat assignments. “Aussie – that’s where her future is. I’m keen to get her over to Melbourne as soon as possible. Once I’m back home after my Waterloo Cup commitments I’ll sit down and work out a plan for her.

“Yes I know they have some real gun stayers over there at the moment. I’m strongly of the opinion that she will be competitive with their top stayers. What she showed me in the Kingston Cup confirmed those thoughts to me. Hopefully she’ll get the opportunity to show that,” added Roberts, who amongst after races has the A$75,000 to the winner Topgun Stayers on his wish list for Dyna Weslyn.

The Topgun Stayers over 725m is an invitation only event, where connections are invited to nominate their greyhounds, raced on The Meadows track in Melbourne on October 27. Ring The Bell was invited to contest this race last year after he won the Kingston Cup. He went onto run a very creditable third in the hot field that was assembled for it.

From there, races like the Group 1 A$150,000 Bold Trease (715m) on Melbourne Cup night (November 23) are likely to be pencilled in for Dyna Weslyn.

As mentioned above there are absolute quality stayers currently racing in Melbourne including the Robbie Britton trained litter brothers Tornado Tears (left) and Rippin’ Sam who are pictured here after their powerful respective 595m and 715m Speed Star match race wins at Sandown Park last Sunday. The brothers clash again on Saturday night at The Meadows over 725m in a Group 3 event.
